I would like to share about my friend, Linh, who recently made a smart decision that perfectly reflects her knack for finding bargains. Instead of hiring expensive contractors and buying brand-new furniture, Linh chose to visit local second-hand markets and online marketplaces. She spent weeks researching and comparing prices, and her efforts paid off. She managed to find high-quality, preloved furniture at a fraction of the original price. Does consumption have any impact on the environment?

Absolutely. Consumption has enormous impacts on the environment. The production of goods requires natural resources and often generates pollution. Shipping products across the globe contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Not to mention, the packaging of many products is excessive and adds to the problem of waste. Plus, when we discard old things, they end up in landfills, contributing to waste and potential pollution of land and water.

Why do people always want to buy new things to replace old ones?

There are a few reasons. Advertising constantly pushes us to want the latest and greatest, making us feel what we have is outdated. Also, things aren’t built to last like they used to – sometimes it’s actually cheaper to just replace a broken item than to repair it. Plus, with the rise of fast fashion, we’ve been conditioned to expect clothes to be cheap and disposable, so we don’t value them as much. For some people, buying new stuff is about status and portraying an image of success.

Why do you think some people replace things more often than others?

Sometimes it’s about genuine need – if an essential appliance breaks down, you gotta replace it. But some people are more influenced by trends and advertising, so they get caught in that cycle of buying the newest thing even if they don’t truly need it. There might also be some psychology around it – getting something new gives that temporary hit of happiness. Of course, financial means play a huge role, too – people with more money have the luxury of replacing things on a whim.

Why do young people change things more often than old people?

There are a few reasons for this. Young people are still figuring out who they are and what they like, so experimentation is natural. They might change their hair, their style, their friend groups…it’s part of finding their identity. Also, young people generally have fewer responsibilities – no mortgage, maybe no kids– so there’s less risk involved in trying new things. Plus, let’s be honest, older folks often get set in their ways. Change can be harder when you’ve had decades of doing things the same way!

Why do some people like to buy expensive things?

For some, it’s about status. Expensive possessions might signal success or wealth, which can boost their ego. Others believe in quality and assume high price equals high quality… which isn’t always true! Sometimes, people buy expensive stuff to try to fill a void, hoping that new things will make them happier. For a few, it might even be an addiction – the thrill of the purchase is what they crave.

Why do some people prefer to buy things in the supermarket rather than online?

Being able to see and touch items before buying is a big factor for some. You can assess the quality of fresh produce, or make sure clothing fits correctly. For some folks, particularly older generations, shopping is a social thing. It’s an outing, a chance to chat with people. Also, immediate gratification! No waiting for shipping when you buy in-person. Online shopping definitely has its advantages, but it can’t fully replace the physical experience of browsing a store.
