Write the subject first, followed by the verb.

E.g. Weeds are important too because birds eat the seeds.

Subject: Weeds

Verb: are

 

Reverse the sentence to begin with the dependent adverbial clause.

E.g. Because birds eat the seeds, weeds are important too.

Adverbial clause: Because + S + V +…

 

Begin a sentence with an infinitive phrase used as an adjective.

E.g. To get a head start, he arrived 20 minutes early.

Infinitive phrase: To + V +…

 

Use an infinitive phrase as a subject.

E.g. To get a head start was his goal.

Infinitive phrase (subject)+ V (was) + N (his goal)

 

Begin a sentence with a prepositional phrase and end it with the subject.

E.g. From out of nowhere came a load shriek.

Prepositional phrase: From out of +…

 

Begin a sentence with an adjective.

E.g. Sad about being alone in the house, the puppy lay down and waited by the front door.

Adjective: Sad

 

Begin with an adverb.

E.g. Regretfully, I will not be able to attend the wedding.

Adverb: Regretfully

 

Begin with an “ing” participial phrase.

E.g. Muttering to himself, the old man shuffled throughout the house.

“ing” participial phrase: Muttering

 

Begin with an “ed” participial phrase.

E.g. Angered by the long wait, I slammed the phone down on the receiver.

“ed” participial phrase: Angered

 

Start with a transitional word.

E.g. Finally, we found the lost keys.

Transitional word: Finally
